AI to halt or slow down?

September 14, 2026

Over the weekend and earlier today, there has been a call to slow the advancement of AI. This coming from leaders of the largest AI companies. Here’s the paper from the head of Anthropic.

And then OpenAI’s chief Sam Altman, along with his former friend and now bitter rival – Elon Musk – chimed in with similar sentiments. See full article here.

Meanwhile an AI researcher has quit his job and sounds the alarm.

I have discussed this before, saying from my very limited vantage point that there’s a non-zero chance that things could go off the rails. It looks like some of the experts are starting to say the same thing, and advocating for additional safeguards to be put in place.

But of course the Chinese are full steam ahead.

Which of course makes President Trump confirm there is nothing wrong with the current regulations. In his words, all that is needed is this…

Well, maybe that’s a stretch. We may need more than that.

While AI and LLMs (Large language models) are helpful and aren’t the concern here (no one is arguing against its incredible ability to help you pull together a dinner recipe at the last minute!), the real concern is generative AI.  The point where machines start to do things on their own and improve their own systems without human intermediaries. That has already started to happen…

The big problem as I see it is the alignment of AI with human goals. But that hasn’t been solved yet..

One of the AI researchers, Jacob Coxon, said

That’s a concern to me. I sort of like the world we’ve built (though not perfect), and I would hate to see Terminator come to real life!

Ok, well how’s that for a Monday? On that note, I hope you have a good week. Looks like AI chiefs are meeting in Washington as this gets published.
